MIT's SWARM Health Management Project - Draganflyer Platform

MITMIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) has developed an interesting application of the Draganflyer platform. Their sophisticated computer system allows many different Draganflyers to group and swarm together, collaborating on a task. Professor Jonathan How, with graduate students Mario Valenti, Brett Bethke, Daniel Dale, Xiaojie Hu, and administrative assistant Kathryn Fischer have all worked together to create this interesting system with some incredible real world applications.

The system works by interfacing each Draganflyer to a computer and tracking each ones motion and orientation. The computer then calculates exactly what speed each rotor of the Draganflyer should be spinning at. It then sends signals relaying this information to the Draganflyers.

The Swarm Health Management Project has some very interesting benefits. For instance, the computer monitors each UAV simultaneously allowing them to fly in close proximity without danger of a collision. The swarm is also adaptive so that it can adjust if one of the Draganflyers runs out of power or is damaged by launching new ones.

SWARM stands for Self-assembling Wireless Autonomously Reconfigurable Modules.

The Swarm Health Management Project is one of the most interesting applications of the Draganflyer to date. We look forward to seeing more inventions using the Draganflyer platform from MIT.

The Swarm UAVs are all assigned different tasks by the computer, and will execute them with help from other UAVs.

They can be programmed to survey ground objects, and wait for any ones state to change. After an event is observed by one UAV, it will begin to chase the object of interest. Other UAVs will even come to its assistance. Watch this video presentation for a demonstration of how this works.

The Vanderbilt University VECPAV UAV Control System - Draganflyer Platform

Vanderbilt UniversityProfessor T. John Koo at Vanderbilt University has created a computerized control system for unmanned robotic vehicles. The Draganflyer RC helicopter was his selected platform for testing the sophisticated software system, due to its design simplicity and low cost.

The VECPAV (Vanderbilt Embedded Computing Platform for Autonomous Vehicles) system uses a tracking station to constantly monitor the Draganflyers position and velocity. This data is then fed into a computer system, which calculates the precise motor outputs necessary to maintain a pre programmed course. This system also allows the Draganflyer to hover in one place - perfect for taking aerial video.
